JAPANESE CULTURE @NOVA
As part of the research activities of the CHAM - Humanities Centre, the NOVA University runs a series of cultural events and initiatives on Japan, coordinated by lecturer João Paulo Oliveira e Costa. These events include conferences, exhibitions and colloquia that explore the historical relationship between Portugal and Japan, as well as contemporary aspects of Japanese culture. We would like to highlight João Paulo Oliveira e Costa, a full professor and director of CHAM, who is dedicated to the study of Portuguese-Japanese relations and is known for his vast historiographical work on Japan. He was president of the Portugal-Japan Friendship Association and, for his contribution, received the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan. Alexandra Curvelo, a full professor and leading researcher, studies cultural interactions between Portugal and Japan, with a focus on Nanban art. She has collaborated with Japanese institutions and was honoured by the Japanese Ambassador for her role in promoting Luso-Japanese studies.
