PROJECTS OF INOVAON

An interdisciplinary approach is essential for tackling the complexity of the tourism sector.

A NOVA plataforma de Turismo e Hospitalidade, em conjunto com as várias faculdades, desenvolve soluções personalizadas e co-construídas com as empresas para a resolução dos desafios que estas enfrentam.

With an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach between company teams and its teaching and research staff – NOVA will develop solutions tailored to the reality of each company.

The methodologies employed will be the most advanced concerning verification, study and analysis, projection, and even testing methods, which, with a holistic view of the challenges, allows not only their resolution but also the dual objective of adding value and increasing return.

The collaboration between the university's various fields of knowledge and businesses will drive innovation in the sector in a sustainable and lasting way.

Carbon Neutrality in Tourist Developments

As part of the project Sustainable Tourism – a better destination for [with] everyone_, funded by the Environmental Fund, the University of NOVA Lisbon, in partnership with Turismo de Portugal, developed two guides for tourist developments – for Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Construction – which are today a benchmark among national operators as the main guides for good practices.

It aims to present the options currently available and help define mitigation strategies for tourism developments, with the intention of aligning the sector with the commitment to a carbon-neutral Europe by 2050.

Given its economic connections, tourism's impacts are particularly strong in the local farming and fishing industries, handicrafts and construction industry, among others. It is for these reasons that tourism is strongly recognised as a valuable tool in alleviating poverty, as employment within the sector can provide income and experience and therefore contribute to a person's social inclusion and individual development. It also contributes in a major way to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of destinations, where local people are employed and trained and income flows directly to the local economy.

MIND THE TOURISM

NOVA has developed, together with NEST, an ideation programme aimed at students and start-ups with the objective of promoting the creation of technological solutions with the potential for value creation and impact in the sector.

The programme featured the participation of 5 of the NOVA's Faculties, with debates and various panels, and sessions with industry leaders.

The programme was carried out in two phases, with the first phase focusing on generating and mapping a set of ideas about innovation opportunities in tourism, promoting cross-fertilisation of ideas, based on sustainability and technology.

The second phase, based on the organisation of a Hackathon, aims to create technological solutions that respond to opportunities within three main areas: Sustainability, Security, and Health and Wellbeing.
